Upon landing, Iden is taken into custody by the school's Aqualish Headmaster Gleb. This is a rather disappointing and slow moving introduction to what I hope to be a thrilling campaign. Under the pretext of helping her, Tarvyn alerts Commander Udrai who sends stormtroopers to arrest Iden for sedition. Iden also tells Del to convince Piikow not to trust Staven. Azen tries to pin the blame onto Iden but she counters that she has provided Staven with useful intelligence. Before they can dispose of the bodies, several of the statues approach them and carry the bodies of the fallen away. The Mentor is a tall, clean-shaven man with thick, shaggy dark hair. A defiant Azen is then tortured to death by the Dreamers for the next seven hours. Not wanting Seyn's sacrifice to be in vain, Iden takes responsibility for Seyn's death and says they should have watched out for one another more. Going in with that frame of mind I should have at least thought this book was OK but did not. This book surprised me - in a good way. Staven regards the journal incident as the last straw. Iden confronts the Mentor at the amphitheater and reveals that he knows that she found her journal.
Later, the Mentor returns, having visited an underground cavern filled with pink crystals after hearing Del and Piikow's hypothesis on their connection with the statues. . While traveling aboard the Corvus, Iden confides with Del that she did not kill the Mentor. The plot and characters are not engaging, overall just kinda boring and uninspired.
I really enjoyed this book. Inferno was first commissioned to infiltrate and destroy the Dreamers, an extremist group composed of former members of Saw Gerrera's Partisans that were not present with Saw on Jedha after the Battle of Yavin.
I enjoyed the Clone Wars and Rogue One connections and I adored half the characters and despised half of the others. .
★ I believe this book is supposed to take place before that game, and it kinda of sewed the seeds for Iden to eventually question the Empire she loves so dear. Inferno Squad is not your typical video game tie-in novel. This book is exactly the same. I was excited to learn about the soldiers of Inferno Squadron, but as the book ended I had in fact learned very little.
With Seyn's loyalty in question, Piikow believes that Seyn sabotaged their factory bombing operation on Anukara and that she engineered Sadori's death. lol it did not even take me 5 minutes at all! Rudaga works for the Empire and is aware of Seyn's true identity.
