Just want to Thank every one for the Feedback!I have shot a whole lot of deer in my life with about half of them taken by Remington Core-Lokts.Started out when I was a teenager with a Winchester 30-30 and later used a Marlin 30-30 and never lost a whitetail with one.And like most of us have owned many rifles and different calibers.So getting a older Marlin 336 for my 18 year old son to start with is perfect for a starter Deer and Black Bear gun in Virginia.I already have a box of Federal 150 grain so will use that to get on the Target and then finish the sighting in process with Remington Core-Lokt 150 grain.Now if these for some reason do not shoot real good then I will get the 170 grain Remington Core-Lokt and sight those in.I have had in my 30-06 one time the Core-Lokts not open up enough in 180 grain and had to shoot this large Buck about 4 times in the Chest running straight at me.Thats when I knew I was shooting to large of a Bullet in 180 grains.Switched back to 150 grains and problem was corrected.So that is why I want to give the 150 grain Bullet a try first.I like that the Remington Core-Lokt great Whitetail and Black Bear round plus reasonably priced!!
Muzzle energy and paper ballistics have never killed anything. Probably that old Federal factory load used a Sierra 150 gr. Core Lokt (SP & PSP) have taken many a whitetail in my neck of the woods. Many years and many shots over the chrono bear out the truth, brand "X" 170 grain bullets go about 2100 fps, and 150 grain about 2250 fps. flat point so that would seem a logical place to begin.

Those gave us the best groups in each gun. and I had a lot of success like that. i just bought a 1952 marlin model 336 rc 30/30, i have found that the Winchester 170 grain power point, are very accurate at 200 yards, i just fired a few Win 170 grain Deer/Bear ammo and still hit almost 200 yards bulls eye. But, I doubt I’d have seen much difference with the 170s which my Dad used. 150's work just fine. Evidently your rifle likes 150's, so go with that.
My 30-30 shoots 150's the best, shoots Federal Blue box 170's well, and patterns the Hornady 160ftx Leverevolution loads like a shot gun. I've never shot a deer with a 30-30 so I have no experience with it. Yes please. 150 or 170 grain, no shot will be over 100yards. Classic double lung shot at 50 yards, .30 caliber hole in, .50 caliber exit wound.

A spire point bullet you can shoot in a tube magazine. Who knows but switched to hornady interlocks and sst’s and have not looked back. I would buy one box of each then see what the gun prefers. Use what your gun likes best.. both weights harvest deer without any issues. Some use the 150 grain bullets over 170 grains to get a flatter trajectory, but the difference is very minimal with regular (no plastic or weird alloys) factory ammo. They work very well on deer. Setting up for my son a 1970 Marlin 336 putting on it a Leupold Rifleman 3x9 Scope with Gamekeeper mount.He is 18 and never shot a Whitetail yet himself but has been with me when I did.Have a Box of Federal Shells to sight in but have used a lot of Remington Core Lokts on Deer and a few Bear.If you use something different with good success let me know it will be Monday or Tuesday before I buy them!Thanks for any feedback.
