Vortex named their reticle EBR-2C MRAD and Athlon APRS1 FFP IR MIL. It has a bigger field of view at the same magnifications, better sharpness, and a better eye-box. The biggest con to the cartridge is the brass. The Ares have real zero stops as opposed to the older Vortex shims, but the newer Gen II Vortex PSTs are a fair comparison, and I understand they have true zero stops like the Ares. The turrets controls on the Viper also get the nod. They are very similar but I prefer the center cross-hair style of the Viper vs the Ares. For all these reasons I chose the Athlon Ares BTR FFP 4.5-27x50mm for my long range hunting gun. I realize that getting hands on either of these scopes right now, particularly the Athlon, is a chore. The Tango 4 is very close but the eye relief on the Tango is debilitating. Anyone got one yet? The reticles in these rifle scopes are both in milliradians, so the lines in the reticle and the clicks on the turrets are always matched. Whatsoever, I do like the windage turret of Athlon because the turret is lockable, so if you zero the rifle scope in, you can lock the turret and you don’t have to worry that you accidentally turn the turret when you are carrying the rifle. They are hands down 10x better than the Ares all the way around. The Clicks on both rifle scopes feel great, are very positive and audible. The glass on the Ares would earn a 7.6. Both elevation turrets have also a zero stop function, so the turret stops at 0 (or your preferred position) when you dial it back. The warranty of these two products is very similar because they will repair or replace the damaged product, no matter if the product was damaged by the user or if just broke inside.
